Riders engage in some personal singletrack dueling, regardless of whether they race or not. You could be riding buddies, someone you meet, or even everyone in a group ride. The greatest equalizer is friendly competition. There is nothing better than being the fastest or most skilled rider. It’s a shared victory. Even for the riders who were smoked. We all strive to improve. Every ride brings us personal victories. Because we are all out there, friendly competition is what ties us together. It’s that fact that we earned respect.

Many people will never dream of racing in the National Mountain Bike Series. Mountain biking is a lifeline because local racing is vital. This is for weekend warriors who want to mix with hardcore local riders.

ONTO THE CAL STATE
Castaic Lakes’ beloved cross-country course opened the doors to the eight-race California State XC Series. This course is tough with steep climbs and brutal descents. After a steep, switchbacked descent that is arm-seizing, the course crosses 6.1m above the shoreline. The half-mile breather racers have the opportunity to enjoy the company of anglers, waterskiers, and sunbathers. They also try their best to keep to the narrow trail. It is unlike any other course.

CASTAIC CASTAIC LAKE STATS
The total climbing for each lap of the 6.7-mile course was 386.8m. The steepest climb was the 167.6 m from the lake to the green picnic tables. The average climbing grade was 10%, with the steepest pitch at 25%. Even the class winners had to push hard in mid-eighty temperatures due to dehydration, cramping, and muscle cramping.
